It is no secret that sourcing LED street light modules from China can cut your costs and boost your efficiency, and it can also make you return to site time and again for field failures.


The difference is usually decided before you sign the purchase order: it depends on how well you understand the product and how rigorously you check a supplier's qualification.

LED light source — package type (3030 / 5050 / 3535 / COB), brand, binning and efficacy. Improper binning shows up as color differences between luminaires.


LED PCB board — MCPCB structure, copper thickness, thermal path and circuit layout.


Secondary optics — lens material, beam angle and light distribution. For road applications, this usually means directing the light onto the road surface rather than up into the sky, improving uniformity, reducing glare and saving energy. Heat sink — the element buyers most often forget. It determines whether the LED junction temperature stays low enough in your ambient temperature to deliver the rated lifetime.


If you buy these five elements separately from five different suppliers, you take on the integration risk yourself: the optics may not match the LED layout, the driver may not match the forward voltage, and the heat sink may not match the wattage.


That is why one of the most useful questions you can ask a supplier is: “Can you design and match the optics, LED PCB board, LED driver and heat sink as one tested system?”


A “one-stop” capability that deserves serious evaluation rather than being dismissed as marketing talk.



Part 2 Check the Evidence: Six Signals That Separate Manufacturers from Resellers


Scale claims (“50,000 m² factory”, “fully certified”) say little. 


The 6 evidence signals below say much more.



Signal 1 Free optical verification before tooling


A rigorous manufacturer runs optical design and IES simulation before you pay for a mold, otherwise you are paying for a mold that may not achieve its photometric target.

Signal 2 Transparent mold process


Three questions will expose most resellers:


“Why make an experimental mold (sample tooling) first?”

The answer should be: yes, and it will be kept confidential.


“Can you quote without existing drawings?”

A design-driven manufacturer can start from a sketch, reference photos or key parameters (LED model, beam angle, dimensions); a catalog reseller cannot.



Signal 3 Controllable LED source


Ask which brands of LEDs the manufacturer actually assembles. 


Capable manufacturers work with well-known brand of light-emitting diodes, cover COB, SMD and high-power packages. 


If a supplier cannot even state which brands it assembles, then you need to pay attention to it.



Signal 4 Precise documentation


Be wary of claims such as “factory certified”: certifications like UL apply to specific products, not to an entire factory. 


For any LED street light module, request the documents that actually matter:


• the CE declaration of conformity for the complete luminaire model;

• the RoHS compliance certificate for the module;

• test reports of the module against the relevant safety standards, such as EN 62031 and IEC/EN 62471.



Signal 5 Small-batch capability and customization depth


New projects often live or die on the trial order. Confirm in writing whether a small first batch still receives full design support. 


Also map out the customization you need: custom PCB board dimensions (to fit legacy housings), private labeling, LED driver matching. 


For retrofit projects,the ability to replicate an existing board rather than redesign it.

Case studies with real numbers and real failure analyses are worth more than any customer testimonial.

Part 3 Learning from Real Cases: Two Money-Saving Lessons


3.1 Heat Is the #1 Killer of LED Street Light Modules


In January 2026, a Qatari customer's 120W LED street light modules — built with 96 LUMILEDS 3030 chips in two groups — repeatedly burned out in a high-ambient-temperature environment: the PCBs were scorched and the LED lenses yellowed. 


The LED chips and the optical design were not the problem. 


The root cause was an undersized heat sink: the manufacturer's standard 64-in-1 3030 LED street light module (50–60W) is paired with a 300×70×40mm heat sink, while the customer's modules used only a 200×60×37mm one.

What this means for you: when specifying an LED street light module, ask what size of heat sink the module was validated with, and match it to your luminaire and ambient temperature.


Do not just look at the wattage. 


3.2 Replace the PCB, Not the Whole Luminaire


In June 2025, the PCB of a Hungarian customer's 100W high bay light failed. The complete luminaire could not be replaced, so the requirement was a replacement board identical or highly similar to the original. 


Based on photos of the customer's lens and PCB — confirming the LED positions and positioning holes — combined with the board diameter and circuit information, we replicated the original layout, kept the original 3030 LEDs, delivered a replacement plan within 24 hours, and then mass-produced the custom PCBs with the matching LEDs and assembly.
